What's Porn Got to Do With It?

After 41 years, the soap opera All My Children is going off the air in September.   Four decades of cliffhangers, amnesia, “weddings of the century,” kidnappings and “You’re NOT the baby’s father…!”   are coming to an end. Not to mention Susan Lucci’s epic run of non-winning Emmy ceremonies.

Apparently, soaps are the latest victim of reality TV.  I mean, who can compete with the likes of Snooki, chair-throwing housewives, shark fishermen and folks who can construct a pantsuit out of cupcakes?

But this longtime entertainment stalwart isn’t alone – the porn industry, one of the more bulletproof offerings, is also falling victim to “real people” with their own video cameras.  Although personally, I can’t say I want to watch some couple from Tulsa who’s had one too many wine coolers – but that’s just me.

The point is, entertainment as a DIY affair is evolving at warp-speed.  And the notion of “on demand” is taking on a new meaning.   While there may always be large groups of folks who communally tune in (somewhere) to check out American Idol, I think we’re rapidly heading to a place where “networks” are hyper one-to-one.  Some combo platter of slickly-produced, ad-driven offerings with viral “everyman” fare – and things we can’t even imagine yet in between.   Couple this with our ever-decreasing attention spans [researchers call it “popcorn brain”] and the entertainment of the future may well be nothing more than short hits, sampled at the rate that we channel-surf now.    Which doesn’t give your average soap opera diva enough time to explain how she came to wind up in bed with her father-in-law.  How do YOU see it all playing out?  Pass the wine coolers and discuss.
